Krzysztof Wodiczko's The Veteran Vehicle Project
Utilizing a Humvee as a projectile device transformed into a projector, Denver's homeless veterans' own stories were seen and heard larger than life in the "mobile social theater."
Paragraph
What's most unconventional about these pieces of art is one, a mobile social theater which is generally unheard of and the subjects are also unconventional. Giving a voice to Denver's homeless veterans and allowing them to tell their stories "out loud" through the use of a humvee was brilliant.

All but 5 of 41 cast members have developmental disabilities, but each one feels ‘Footloose’
Drew Jubera in the Atlanta Journal Constitution about a local theater production starring people with intellectual disabilities
“I do it for the same reason real actors do it: to get away from who I am and be someone else. It’s challenging every day to do things. But this shows people with disabilities ‘you can do it.’ Linda Danzig, 57

Paragraph
Most people would not expect to see others with intellectual disabilities performing in the theater. While it is unconventional and difficult for people with intellectual disabilities to perform everyday living responsibilities, they have also shown despite their debilitating disease it is possible to do whatever you put your mind to.
HOPE & ANCHOR (Third Rail Projects)
Evolve Company's Barry Weil
Dancer Marissa Nielsen-Pincus into an unconventional mermaid for this outdoor dance-theatre piece (by Zach Morris & Keely Garfield) at NYC's South Street Seaport.
Marissa had to crawl and flop across concrete and cobblestones in her fishtail, as well as climb fences and drag herself through some truly nasty puddles. We're very proud of the fact that the tail (made of layered, latex-impregnated fabric) only needed one small hole patched throughout the entire run. The mermaid character (and the tail) have since made appearances in Third Rail's Squall and Undercurrents and Exchange. Photo by Arthur Donowski.
Paragraph
I cannot imagine having to be trapped in a mermaid tail that's made of layered latex for hours. Marissa had to crawl and flop across concrete with cobblestones in the fishtail. Climbing fences and having to drag herself through filthy puddle and afterwards there was only one small hole to be patched. The uncomfortable situation in which Marissa experinced is unconventional and generally unheard of these days.In-Site-Ful Theatre: Moving Audiences Thru Flat or Factory
In a reinvented production of Henrik Ibsen's "The Lady from the Sea" (herewith entitled "LADYFROMTHESEA"), audiences move at their own pace through the various rooms and courtyards of the Brooklyn-based Old American Can Factory, while duos and trios of performers, assigned to spaces throughout the factory.
Creator Deborah Warner
"exploring the boundaries of theatrical experience,"
Paragraph
This reinvented production of Lady From The Sea created a hands on approach to the production where the audience interacts with the performers going from room to room. Duos and Treos of performers move with the audience as they re-enact each scene. Wow, how unconventional is that.Welcome to the Playback Theatre Sydney website
“Storytelling is fundamental to the human search for meaning.”
Mary Catherine Bateson
Audience members tell snippets or stories from their lives and the actors play the story back using movement, drama, and music. On the spot - no rehearsal, no planning - complete improvisation. It’s startling, moving, and very often, very funny!
Ric HubbardCEO - CREATE Foundation
“The Playback Theatre event, held during Foster Care weekproved to be an innovative means by which the important issues that face carers and caseworkers were brought out in a sensitive way”

Paragraph
Another unconventional approach to being heard and telling their stories through the art of performers and story tellers. The Play Back Theater was an amazing idea played out by actors who tell the stories of case workers and other careers that challenge the stress and emotional dependency their jobs can create. What a great approach and therapy to allow these workers to release emotional tension and stress through art.
